Welcome to one of the more bizarre libations in Hungary: Cola plus red wine. Order one up by requesting a hunter.
Written by Scott Savoie
Technically, „vadász” translates to the English word „hunter.” So there is a direct literal translation for the word, i.e. „one who hunts.”
In Hungary, however, the word also means „Putting red wine into cola.” Or „...cola into red wine,” I forget.
Usually this is done with very cheap wine, so often the cola winds up being the more expensive ingredient. The cheaper the wine, the more the cola makes sense.
The vadász is unique to Hungary as far as I know, but you rarely see it on the menu. You can order one but the waiter or waitress might ask if you want a puska (gun) to go with it.
It is better to order the soda and cruddy wine separately and mix it to your own liking, if possible.
There appears to be a huge descrepancy in the proportions of wine to cola. Much depends on how much is left and how much has been consumed. The ratios range from 90 percent wine to 90 percent cola – Somewhere in there.
So get yourself some Eger Bull’s Blood (Egri bikávér) and some pop, and let the good times roll!
