Szentendre: A bit touristy, but beautiful -- and just a nice 40-minute ride by rail from Budapest!

Just a a 40-minute ride via the HÉV (the commuter rail) from Batthány square lies Szentendre. You must buy a supplemental ticket even if you have a monthly bérlet. The ticket inspectors live for such occasions and aren’t likely to be forgiving.
Szentendre is a Serbian village that has become something of an artists’ colony by the Danube. There has been a some sort of settlement there from the second century. The city started to flourish after the Turks got kicked out in the 1700s. Serb, Croats and Greeks set up shops and leather goods operations in the area.

Szentendre is quite picturesque with baroque architecture and cobblestone streets. There are a number of galleries and giftshops to browse and lots of ice cream, palacsinta, and lángos places. There are a number of beautiful churches to peek into, including Greek and Serbian temples.
Szentendre is an easy day trip from Budapest. Although it is a bit touristy, it can offer some respite from hustle and bustle of the capital city.
