Among the most tangible differences between Hungary and the U.S. is the stunning amount of obese folks in the latter.

One of the biggest differences one notices when going from Hungary to the US is the vast number of obese people in the ‘States.
Everywhere you go in North America you see big, rotund people stuffing gooey, greasy, sugary crud into their gaping maws. In Hungary, there are fat people as well, I suppose but certainly not to the degree that you see in the ‘States.

In part, the difference may be the attitude towards food itself. In Hungary, it seems food – even fast food – is much more important. Hungarians, I think, tend to eat more deliberately and consume more filling foods like soup.
In the U.S., food is wolfed down in SUVs by corpulent people soon after it is purchased at the drive-through.
I think fashion may play a part as well. In the spring, short skirts will again be in style in Budapest. In the ‘States, mini-skirts went out with the Nixon Administration and then again after Ronald Reagan’s first term as president.
One hope they don't come back in style in America anytime soon, as that could put you off your lunch.
