One of the problems with Hungarian railway company MÁV: A bizarre sort of user-unfriendliness in which the fast trains are not quite so fast...
The Hungarian railway is exensive and functions relatively reliably.
One of the problems with MÁV is that its systems are sometimes not very clear or user-friendly. This is especially true for tourists whose knowledge of Hungarian may be lacking or whose knowledge of MÁV and Hungarian geography may be lacking.
For example, there are fast trains in Hungary. There are the intercity or IC trains. This is not to be confused with the German ICE trains which are quite fast, or the French TGV which is really really fast.
The Hungarian Inter-city trains are kind of medium-fast.
However the Hungarians also have a slower train call a gyors vonat. Translated literally, this means „fast train.” But in actuality, it is a great deal slower than the IC trains.
Just to review: the „fast trains” in Hungary are actually the slow trains. Simple, huh?
In addition to these trains, there is also szemely trains (or „person trains”). This means that the train will move at about the same speed as a person. On foot. An old person. These trains stop every few hundred yards and reach a top speed of about 6.5 miles per hour.
