Is that green thing Shrek or just a bit of karalábé...?

If you are ever in Hungary and you find a turnip-like vegatable floating around in your soup, it just might be kohlrabi (or, in Hungarian, „karalábé”).
In its natural state, kohlrabi looks a little bit like Shrek: green, with kind of tubular outgrowths on it. And the comparison doesn’t end there. Kohlrabi smells a little like ogre. Kohlrabi tastes like I would imagine Shrek’s toejam would taste like. It gives vegetables a bad name; kohlrabi makes Brussels sprouts look good.
Kohlrabi must be good for you: Things that taste this bad usually are healthy so I am guessing Kohlrabi must some medicinal properties. From the taste, I am guessing kohlrabi could cure you of say, cancer, glaucoma, AIDS and leprosy all at the same time. If anyone could ever manage to eat one. Hungarian chefs are working on cure for this inability, but so far, no luck.
The tricky thing about kohlrabi is that once it is cut up and in a soup, for example, it looks a lot like things that taste good, like potatoes.
You never know until you bite into one. Ughh. Just like ogre.
