The Kőbanya Chinese market in Budapest is a cultural experience all its own – like a little bit of Bangkok in Central Europe.
The sign at the door warns you not to bring in cameras or guns, so you know something nefarious is going on.
Inside, you can find piles of any consumer product made in China. Nike shoes with the swoosh going in the wrong direction, X-out and irregular clothing alongside some respectable counterfeits.
One of the oddest thing you find are the T-shirts. Young girls fashion T-shirts with a word like "slut” written in all caps and 1000-point type across the front. I think to myself, "Does she know what that says? Does she think that "shloot"’ (as it might be said with Hungarian pronounciation) is some American or possibly German fashion designer?”
You also see women’s shirts that have "too cute” or "way too cute” written on them. Usually this labeling is false as well.
Are these shirts the practical joke of some Chinese garmant worker ?
Are there Hungarians somewhere planning to export Ribanc jeans to America?
You ponder that while I try on my new Arizona Cardinals 2009 Superbowl Champions shirt.
