Are you now, or have you ever been, a fúkár? It may not be quite what you think...

"Fúkár" is a Hungarian word meaning "cheap, stingy or greedy."
Apparently this word isn’t nearly as insulting as the English word that it so closely resembles.
You see this word on advertisements for everything from food to electronics.
The billboards scream out, „Come on, you cheap fúkárs! What are you waiting for?” and some such.
I have always been a cheap fúkár. Even back in the ’States, people called me that all the time.
People would say things like „Hey, thanks for the gift [you fúkár]!” I didn’t speak Hunagarian back then, so I didn’t get the compliment.
The word fúkár only looks funny to me because of my English-speaking background; it’s the same the way the word „cookie” sounds funny to Hungarians.
So I accept the fact that fúkár is just another word, but can’t help smile to myself when there is a Mother’s Day sale.
