Late winter is definitely not the best time of the year for Budapest. Thinking of visiting at this time? Then read on and dress appropriately.

As the winter drags on, the citizens of Hungary wait desparately for the first signs of spring. The skies are grey and the snow is dirty and melting. There are intermittantly puddles of fetid water and slick mini-rinks of fetid ice.
Streets like Rákóczi are lined with muddy puddles. This morning, the number 7 bus was coming by and, I don’t know if the driver did this on purpose or not, totally soaked me. We used to do this on waterskis when I was a child: Kick up a big spray to soak unsuspecting people. Perhaps today’s drenching was delayed karma.
This is probably a popular sport among BKV bus drivers. Soak the pedestrians. Well, mister number 7 bus driver, go ahead and give yourself the maximum points allowed: You got me.
And for everyone else out there, flying mud is a potential urban hazard in Budapest from late winter to early spring. Pack your umbrella and waterproof (and mudproof) gear for Central Europe in February.
