Halloween in Budapest 2009

Here is a list of 5 different ways you may want to spend this Halloween if you are living as an Xpat in Hungary

Written by Natalie Jaro

Of the few Halloween events I found for American expats living in Hungary I have 4 possibilities to share for consideration: a Halloween charity event, two Halloween bar parties and a holiday weekend trip to Transylvania to visit Dracula’s castle. First if you are feeling charitable at the same time that you are feeling the need to get dressed up and celebrate, the IWCA or the International Women’s Club of Budapest is collaborating with the NAWA or the North American Women’s Association to sponsor a “Twilight Halloween Party” charity fundraiser in the Grand Ballroom of the Royal Corinithia Hotel. The money raised for this event will go towards the IWCA’s, “Feed a Child Project” and the NAWA’s, “Adopt a Granny Project”. Both organizations work toward helping the underprivileged children and seniors of Hungary. The theme of the party will be Twilight/Vampires. The party will commence at 8 in the evening and will go on ‘till late’. Tickets are 13.000 HUF/person and 25.000HUF for a couple. Contact Anel for tickets at anel.vanderwalt@yahoo.com.

A second Halloween event going on in Budapest for a younger, more rowdy crowd may be to head on down to Klub Vittula where DJ Count Popula will be spinning in tune with a few Halloween sounds in mind. Receive a free drink if you come in a costume and check out a parade of characters and show off your own creative garb. The club is on Kertész u.4 and will start at 10 in the evening on October 31st. Two other bars in town that are having Halloween parties are Beckett’s Irish Bar and Iguana’s Mexican Restaurant. Beckett’s will have live music and is at 72 Bajcsy Zsilinszky Street in the 5th district. Iguana’s is a popular choice with expats and is in a prime location near Parliament and is also in the 5th district. If drinks, friends, beers and music win your affections, then one of these two establishments may offer you the Halloween event you are looking for.

If Halloween really gets you excited, there is a special company that does tours in Transylvania. The company is called Transylvania Live. It is a Romanian tour operator agency and it is sure to be a weekend fully steeped in the spooky lore of vampire legends. Enjoy a Halloween party at Sighisoara Citadel, Dracula’s birth place, and visit 3 legendary castles, eat a candle lit dinner in the castle that is most referred to as Dracula’s Castle, and go to the lone tower in Bistrita Citadel to visit Misiuga, Baron of Dracula. Fashion a special stake to kill a Vampire in case you do find yourself face to face with a real live Vampire and participate in a ritual to help a haunted spirit to gain his peace for future reference. Earn stamps along the way that prove your courage and expect a monumental time as the prestigious American Fodor’s travel guide placed the Halloween Transylvania tour with Vlad the Impaler in the Top Ten Must-Do Adventures!
